European Reference Project EUH2STARS has started

01/01/2024 | Report
We are pleased to announce that all relevant documents including the consortium agreement have been signed by all project partners and the EUH2STARS project has started.
The project consortium, comprising of natural gas storage operators, technology providers, utility, research- and governmental organisations, is entrusted by the European Commission to demonstrate a competitive, complete and qualified underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in depleted porous natural gas reservoirs at technical readiness level (TRL) 8 by the end of the decade.
Furthermore, EUH2STARS is a European flagship project for the conversion of existing underground natural gas into hydrogen storages and will pave the way for their integration into the future European hydrogen infrastructure. This will be demonstrated via several replication sites which are an integral part of the EUH2STARS project.
As part of the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON) the project was awarded funding of around 20 million euros and is scheduled to run until September 2029.
We are looking forward to a good cooperation and a successful development of the project.
"Paving the way towards the future of European underground hydrogen storage"
“We are excited to kick-start the project EUH2STARS which will demonstrate the feasibility of a smart and energy-efficient operation of a hydrogen storage facility on depleted gas reservoirs at technology readiness level (TRL) 8. The project will be building on the results of the projects HyUSPRe and USS 2030, funded respectively by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the Austrian Climate and Energy fund.”
